Michigan And Tariffs

Imagine trying to do a group project where one person keeps changing the rules mid-way through, another person storms out, and no one knows who's actually in charge (it’s also like family game night)! That’s basically what Michigan is dealing with when it comes to Trump’s trade policies. We’ve talked before about the strategy of using tariffs, but that doesn’t mean a lot of normal folks don’t get caught in the middle!

Anyway, some Michiganders are cheering, some are sweating bullets, and the state economy feels like it’s riding a roller coaster built by squirrels.

Here are Five Fast Facts on Michigan and tariffs:

  1. 😣 Tariff Tango - Trump declared a “Liberation Day” and slapped tariffs on foreign goods like Oprah giving away cars — “You get a tariff! You get a tariff!” — then pivoted when other countries decided they wanted to play nice.
  1. 📈📉 Red Vs. Blue Economy - Republicans see the trade policies as superhero moves; Democrats see them as economic chaos in a clown car. Either way, the stock market looks like it’s got whiplash.
  1. 😡 Canada Is Not Amused - Our neighbor up north basically gave us a frosty glare and said, “You’re unreliable, eh,” and started looking for new trade BFFs.
  1. 😟 Car Parts And Corn Fields - Michigan’s economy is caught in the middle. Automakers are nervous, and farmers are sweating over their soybean sales. One student’s family even grows mung beans, and apparently those are now part of a global food fight.
  1. 🎯 Flip-Flop Fever - Businesses can’t plan because policies change faster than fashion trends. Economists say this “moving target” strategy is like playing dodgeball…blindfolded.

🔥Bottom line: Whether you’re building cars or growing beans, Michigan’s feeling the heat from these trade shifts. Some folks believe Trump’s playing 4D chess, while others think he lost the Checkers board. One thing’s for sure: until things settle down, everyone’s just trying to hang on and hope the economy doesn’t throw a surprise pop quiz.
