Michigan Announces Money for Entrepreneurs

Fire up Chips - this one's for you.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer and U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina M. Raimondo have announced an exciting new grant program that will help support entrepreneurs in central Michigan. Let’s break down what that means for local business owners and the rest of us..

Here’s Five Fast Facts …… :

  1. 📞 New grant, who dis? The $1.4 million grant is being awarded by the Economic Development Administration (EDA) to the Central Michigan University Research Corporation (CMURC).
  2. ❔ Who the what now? The CMURC is a “business accelerator co-working space” that leverages the resources of Central Michigan University to help small business owners and entrepreneurs. Basically, they supply space and resources so that business and tech leaders can come together to make the Mitten more awesome.
  3. 🏢 What’s included - The money in this grant will go toward office renovations and providing a safer space to work communally post-COVID. This probably means buying a lot of expensive air purifiers so that they’re not breathing in each other’s mutant variants every day, but they deserve it.
  4. 💧 Trickle, Trickle - It’s not just about the renovations and safety measures though, (as much as we love the idea of clean office air) - the grant is also expected to create 100 new jobs and create as much as $5 million in private investments to help the local economy.
  5. ⛳ The long game - Commerce Secretary Raimondo says that these initiatives aren’t temporary and that the jobs created will be high-paying, long-term career opportunities. Let’s hold her to that.

🔥Bottom line: You don’t have to be a Central Michigan alumni to be proud of this move. Helping local businesses is always a winning strategy. So let’s fire up!
