Michigan's boss lady, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, just dropped the biggest economic mic since the invention of the combustion engine - OpenAI's Stargate project picked the Big Mitten for a mega-sized AI data center that's basically a robot brain on steroids. It should bring a huge boom for the state...if it actually comes through. Let's see what's up!
Here are Five Fast Facts on the biggest economic project in Michigan's history:
- 🎉 Holy Job Jackpot! - This project is supposed to crank out over 2,500 union construction jobs and another 450 on-site jobs after it's up and running. Icing on the cake is a bonus 1,500 jobs across Washtenaw County for all the stuff that comes after, turning a sleepy township into a buzzing beehive of opportunity.
- 💰Investment Alert - OpenAI's dropping a mind-blowing $450 billion nationwide over the next three years to build 10 gigawatts of AI power (that's enough juice to power over 8 flux capacitors!), with Michigan snagging the first slice of this electric pie starting construction in 2026.
- 💻 Tech Tag Team - Oracle and Related Digital are the muscle behind the build, dropping this state-of-the-art facility in Saline Township, south of Ann Arbor. It'll be super efficient, using land, water, and power without begging for more from either Mother Nature or the grid.
- 🚒 Community Love - Related Digital's tossing in an extra $14 million for local fire departments, a community fund, and farmland preservation. A little goodwill grease goes a long way, doesn't it?
- 🤔 Fly In The Ointment - The big question is: will it actually happen? After all, this announcement comes just days after Gov. Whitmer announced she had "secured" 36k jobs while in office. But that's just what she's announced...but reality begs to differ - Michigan has lost over 9k actual jobs during that same timeframe. Po-tay-to, po-tah-to, nothing to see here...
🔥Bottom line: We've become skeptical anytime Gov. Whitmer announces jobs. But we really hope this one comes through - it would be a huge win and give the state a boost we could really use right about now! Given that it's in an exploding industry, and major tech companies are climbing all over each other for a lead in the AI race, we feel pretty good about it.
