Michigan Delays Raising the Minimum Wage

Of all the great debates in life: ketchup or mustard on your hot dog, toilet paper over or under, pineapple on pizza -- to raise the minimum wage or not may be the most hotly contested.

How’s the debate going in Michigan? Let’s find out.

Here’s Five Fast Facts …… :

  1. 🏁 The starting line - The current minimum wage in Michigan is $9.67. If that seems like an odd number, it is.
  2. 💰 The push - The Michigan Court of Claims recently told Michigan businesses to get their checkbooks ready, raise the minimum wage to $12, and offer paid sick leave to employees.
  3. ✋But then - Then the court changed its mind. The decision to raise the minimum wage will be delayed until at least February 2023.
  4. ❓❓ Why, though? - In fancy court speak, the reason cited was “the (in)ability of employers and the relevant state agencies to immediately accommodate the changes”. In plain language, the court doesn’t think the timeline is reasonable.
  5. 👔 Market Price - Most manufacturers in the state have already raised the minimum wage to $12 to attract workers. So is this a case of “the market will pay what the market demands”? We’ll have to wait and see.

🔥Bottom line: The “Fight for $15” may still be raging on in Michigan, but the truth is that we’re a long way off from the promise to get to $12. While the government and industries duke it out, the rest of us are in limbo.
