Who here remembers Judge Wapner from the show "The People's Court"? No?
What about Judge Judy? 🦗🦗
Well, neither of those people have anything to do with the Jobs Court. Because this is real life, not a reality TV show.
So what IS Michigan’s Jobs Court?
Here's Five Fast Facts …… :
- ⚖️ No day in court - During the pandemic, a backlog of court cases started building in Michigan courts. Sure, there were some really weird Zoom arraignments and trials but for the most part, low-level criminals never saw their day in court and are still pending in the criminal justice system.
- 🛠️ Back to work - Instead of going back in time or sorting through all these cases now the Jobs Court would basically allow some people to choose between prison and work.
- 🎣 Off the hook? This proposal might seem crazy to some but supporters say this will be good for the economy while also reducing the burden on the courts.
- 🚌 Not just a job - The program's trial run would include about 450 people from Wayne, Genesee, and Marquette counties. In addition to job placement, they would receive support services that could include supervision, transportation assistance, and mental health care.
- 🎉So much winning - Lots of Michigan companies are jumping at the chance to partner with the state for this program. They see the need for motivated employees who want to get (and keep) a job.
🔥Bottom line: While the Job Court might not have the glitz and glam of a TV courtroom, it's a practical solution to a few different problems. This program has the potential to change lives, help businesses, and make our communities safer. A real win-win-win.
