Michigan Looks To Space

Michigan is officially ready to trade in four-door sedans for four-stage rockets! State economic leaders have decided that since Michigan already knows how to build things that move on the ground, they can also start building things that leave the atmosphere, too. The state is hoping to turn the Mitten into a giant launchpad for jobs, satellites, and maybe a very confused deer or two.

Here are Five Fast Facts about Michigan's intent to win the space race:

  1. 🤑 Trillion Dollar Jackpot - Experts say the global space economy is going to skyrocket to $1.8 trillion by 2035, and Michigan wants to make sure its piece of the pie isn't just a freeze-dried astronaut ice cream sandwich.
  1. 🚀 Rocket Science - The state is already involved in space missions - at least 78 Michigan-based entities helped with the recent Artemis II mission. So yes, Michigan is actually doing rocket science.
  1. 🌌 Space Hub - The state is currently looking to open its first Space Innovation Hub, with a starter budget of $1.2 million to help local businesses figure out how to make stuff that doesn't melt in orbit.
  1. 🔧 Mechanics Wanted - A big goal for the state is something called ISAM (In-Space Assembly and Manufacturing), which is a fancy way of saying they want to hire humans and robots to build and fix equipment that's already floating around in the void.
  1. 😖 Failure To Launch - The state is explicitly NOT looking for new rocket launch sites right now, probably because a previous $2.5 million study about a launchpad ended up causing a criminal investigation instead of a countdown.

🔥Bottom line: Michigan is betting big that the "Final Frontier" will lead to some very big terrestrial paychecks. The state has a history of building the machines that moved the 20th century, and they’re now hoping to be the ones providing the nuts, bolts, and digital brains for the 21st century's journey to the stars. It’s a risky gamble, especially considering some sketchy past efforts, but hey, if you’re going to shoot for the moon, you should at least land among the clouds (and maybe in a high-paying space job in Grand Rapids).
