As the country starts to turn off "pandemic mode" and return to normal - at least that's what we hope is going on - some "covid era" relief programs will also end. One of those programs was aimed at helping Michigan renters stay in their homes. Now that the money is drying up, what does it mean for those who still need assistance?
Here's Five Fast Facts …… :
- 🤝 The Deal - The Covid Emergency Rental Assistance program - known as CERA - is a $1.1 billion relief aid package that helped keep Michigan renters in their homes during the pandemic.
- The program was meant to be a temporary fix to help renters who needed to catch up on bills and also offered utility assistance.
- ⏰ Time's Almost Up - The program officially stopped accepting new applications last month. So it's too late to participate if you've been asleep the last few years.
- 😲 The totals - So far, the program has spent $834 million of the $1.1 billion. But that doesn't mean the state is getting a refund. There are still more than 60,000 applications to be processed. Insert jokes here about the efficacy and speed of the government, right!?
- ❓ What now? - The problem isn't just funding. There is still a lack of affordable housing in Michigan. So for many, an eviction is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Once someone is evicted, finding a new place to live is another challenge altogether.
🔥Bottom line: All the funding band-aids in the world can't make more places to live suddenly appear. Advocates for landlords and tenants alike agree that there simply needs to be more affordable housing in the state.
