Millennials Chase Blue Collar Boomer Businesses

Young Millennial entrepreneurs are increasingly shifting from inventing a disruption to buying sleepy blue-collar businesses from baby boomers who are ready to retire. After all, nothing says “future-proof” against AI like plumbing, HVAC, or manufacturing companies with a built in customer base!

Here are Five Fast Facts about Millennial entrepreneurs chasing blue collar boomer businesses:

  1. 🧓 Silver Tsunami - A check of SBA loan data found that almost 7k SBA-backed business acquisition loans were closed in 2025, worth over $8 billion. That's up from just over $5 billion in 2023! The "silver tsunami" of boomers retiring is underway!
  1. 🎯 Not A Job - These buyers are looking to buy a business that can run itself, not a job. Predictability, strong cash flow, and recurring revenue, along with an established customer base, make for a juicy target.
  1. 💋😉 Be Unsexy - The best target businesses are often niche, blue-collar operations with expertise in a specific area (like HVAC, plumbing, or pest control), ideally with revenue transferability so the business keeps working even when the founder sells or retires. Unsexy is the new sexy!
  1. 👍 The Right Stuff - Even if they are small, businesses that have invested in the right equipment and are well run are the best prospects, setting up new owners for success on the little things while they learn the ins and outs of running the business itself.
  1. 🏰 Big Moat - These businesses often require licenses, and many rely on physical work and local relationships that AI can’t instantly replace. It's like they have a real world moat around their niche castle, and AI is stuck on the outside (at least for now).

🔥Bottom line: The idea here is “AI-proofing” by going old school. Instead of trusting algorithms to reinvent your business model, these buyers are betting on the oldest tech of all - people! AI can do a lot of things really well, but someone still needs to fix the thing that breaks. The future may be automated, but the ductwork still needs measuring.
