Minimum Wage Gets a Minimal Raise

Good news! Minnesota minimum wage gets an increase as of January 1! It’s being described as an “inflation adjustment.” Except…well, it’s not a substantial increase and it’s also based on a business’ annual revenue.

Here’s Five Fast Facts About Minnesota’s Minimum Wage Bump.:

  1. 📈 Big Business - Businesses that bring in more than $500,000 a year will get a 26-cent increase, bringing it to $10.59 an hour and an extra $2.08 a day. That’s well below the 84-cent nationwide average.
  2. 🪙 Small and Mighty - Small employer, youth, training, and the summer work travel exchange visitor program get a 21-cent increase
  3. 🧮 Number Crunching - I’ve done the math for you: those are both a whopping 2.5% average.
  4. 🌆 Big City - St. Paul and Minneapolis raised their minimum wage to $15 in July. They’ll raise it again as of Jan. 1 by 19 cents.
  5. 🇺🇸 Nationwide - A total of 25 states will increase minimum wage Jan. 1 due to inflation, legislation or voting results. Roughly 8.4 million Americans make minimum wage.

🔥Bottom line: Considering that you can’t buy anything of substance for 26 cents, the “increase” is the definition of the bare minimum. You can always say “go find another job” but it’s never that easy. Regardless of how you feel about it, any sort of standard minimum wage is going to be a battle for years to come.
