Minnesota Grants Boost Statewide Dual Training Programs

The Minnesota Office of Higher Education just made it easier for employers to train AND educate tomorrow’s workforce. Grants totaling $3.3M have been awarded to 56 different companies to help fund dual training programs in select industries.

 

Here’s Five Fast Facts About Dual Training Grants:

  1. 🏫 What’s Dual Training? - Dual training happens in two places: the classroom and on the job at the same time. It’s often referred to as “Earn and Learn” training. Think of it as an apprenticeship with schooling thrown in on the side.
  2. 💰 Where’d It Come From? - The money comes from the state’s Office of Higher Education. It’s very popular. This year’s application process was apparently the most competitive, with over $1.1M in requests from 20 employers left unfunded. 
  3. 🧑‍⚕️ Who Got It? -  56 employers will use the grant money to give 644 current and new employees education resources and career pathways. The Industries include advanced manufacturing, agriculture, healthcare service, and information technology
  4. 👨‍💻 What’s the Money For? - The money goes toward trainees’ tuition, fees, and required materials. It makes it easier to train on the job. And they’ll have a head start on company gossip.
  5. 🤑 What Happens After?- When trainees finish the program, they’ll have the skills necessary to head into the workforce in several essential industries. While many places can hire their trainees, it’s not guaranteed, but they still have a better chance of employment in their chosen field

🔥Bottom line: Investing in future skilled workers is a huge deal for Minnesota. The need is there, especially in the industries that are still working towards a return to normal post pandemic. Overall this is a win-win for our economy and our education system.
