MN Throws a Lifeline to Childcare Industry

Here’s Five Fast Facts about the DEED Childcare Grants:

  1. 🧒Child Support - The grants authorize $4.85M over the next two years for grants to increase childcare support to support economic development across the state.
  2. ‼️ Sequel - This is actually the second round of grants. DEED previously gave 14 different projects a total of $2.4M.
  3. 🏫 Who? Who? - This round targets local governments or nonprofits with experience in financing, advocacy or advancement in childcare services. If they qualify, they can ask for up to $300,000 from the grant. Granny’s Daycare down the street isn’t eligible.
  4. 🤝Howdy Partner - Providers are encouraged to partner with those candidates to gain access to those funds. Priority will be given to communities with a document shortage of providers in their project area.
  5. 📄Fill It Out - Applications are open until August 30th. There is no current word if there will be a third round or not.

🔥Bottom line: The state is finally stepping in to help. But is it too late? Unless some of those proposals have a plan for staffing up the industry, these efforts may be all for nothing. That said, these grants aren’t going to just anyone, so there’s quite a bit of hope there. Fingers crossed.
