Money Talks: How Men and Women Differ

Did you watch the Academy Awards? Were you team Oppenheimer or team Barbie? 💁🏼‍♀️ Does gender play a role in which one you thought deserved more praise? He's just Ken, after all. 💅

Anywho, we're here to talk about money and the ways men and women differ. 👫💰 According to a new survey, they're on two different pages.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on how men and women talk about money:

  1. 🌥️ Bright Horizons - A recent Wells Fargo study revealed that, when it comes to personal finances, men are more likely than women to have a positive, confident outlook. Additionally, 60% of men said the financial decisions in their household are their primary responsibility, compared to 39% of women.
  2. 🙈 The Shame Game - While the survey uncovered that 74% of women and 76% of men agree that financial health is important to living life, women are more likely to feel uncomfortable and shameful in money talks. Only 48% of women said they felt more comfortable about their debt than they used to be, compared to 57% of men.
  1. 🕳️ Mind the Gap - In their conversations about money, men tend to use positive, confident words, like "relaxed" and "proud." On the other hand, women tend to use negative words, like "frustrating" and "stressful". Why? We could blame the gender pay gap. According to the survey, women earn $0.83 for every dollar earned by men.
  2. 👀 Eye to Eye? - Although women have far greater opportunities to earn and save money than they used to, men and women differ in how equal they perceive themselves. The survey showed that 39% of men believe they have more opportunities to be financially successful than women. However, 48% of women believe this to be true.
  1. 🤱 Setback Station - Because of the gender pay gap and interruptions related to childcare and unpaid caregiving, women tend to save less money for retirement. Despite women making huge progress over the years in education and the workplace, there's still a pretty big disconnect between how men and women view their financial situations.

🔥Bottom line: Whether you belong to team pink or team blue (or something else entirely), every human being should have the same opportunity to achieve their financial goals. There's so much stigma and shame around money, but the younger generations are breaking the mold. In fact, we wrote a whole article about how they're doing it
