More Americans Are Coming Up “Cash-Poor”

We finally figured out why they call money “dough.” It’s ‘cuz we all KNEAD it! Now, let’s get this bread. 😛🍞

Not too long ago, making six figures would have made you the talk of the cul-de-sac. 😎 Nowadays, that same salary doesn’t stretch as far. According to some fresh data, peeps with higher incomes are riding the financial struggle bus, too. 🚌🫠

Here’s Five Fast Facts from the 2026 Cash Poor Report:

  1. 😵 Cash Crunch - The face of financial stress looks different than it used to. Today, one in five cash-poor Americans earns more than $75,000 a year, many work full time, and nearly half have side hustles. Even so, rising expenses and debt continue to leave little money for savings.
  2. 🐖 No Room to Wiggle - Many Americans have little financial cushion for the pushin’. Roughly 44% have less than $200 in savings, while two-thirds say their finances are worse than they expected. Compared to 2023, 17% more people also say they couldn't afford an unexpected expense.
  1. 🛒 Broke By Basics - Paychecks are running into the same problem every week: the essentials cost more. Groceries are the most common planned expense for cash-poor Americans, followed by gas, mortgage payments, and rent, showing how basic living costs are crowding out financial breathing room.
  1. 😰 Stress Test - Financial emergencies don't have to be major disasters to derail a budget. A medical bill, a broken-down car, or an unusually high utility bill can quickly create stress for households with little savings. On average, those unexpected costs total about $1,500 a year.
  1. 💳 Borrow Sorrow - Short-term borrowing can provide immediate relief, but it often increases long-term financial pressure. Americans pay roughly $17.4B annually in subprime credit card fees, $6.64B for payday loans, and $925M to borrow through peer-to-peer fintech lenders.

🔥Bottom line: The average American household is now spending a ton more on everyday expenses. Another whopper? Medical bills. If you’re struggling to pay down medical debt, charity care could throw you a lifeline. Read all about it here in this article
