Have you heard that some of these new data centers are the size of a Walmart Supercenter? Now, that’s what we call a big byte. 🦈 If they need any friendly greeters outside, let us know. We’ll come equipped with tomatoes. 👋🍅
What would you do if Big Tech came busting through your small town? 🤖🏇 In PA, data center plans are rolling out down another hometown Main Street and the locals aren’t having it. Let’s unpack what’s going on. 👇
Here’s Five Fast Facts on PA’s latest data center drama:
- 🔌 Power Moves - Another PA small town is becoming part of the AI boom. In Archbald (Lackawanna County), developers want to build several large data centers that could take up a big chunk of the town. The buildings would be ginormous (think the same size as big retail stores) and built to power AI systems.
- 📣 Let’s Get Loud - At first, most people didn’t notice the plans. But once zoning changes were announced last year, residents began to push back. Now, it’s turned into a major community effort, with people speaking out and organizing locally.
- ⚠️ Danger Zone - The battle over data centers is heating up and getting personal. Several local officials have stepped down, with some saying they were worried about their safety after threats and incidents linked to the data center fight. Even so, developers are continuing their plans, setting up a bigger showdown.
- 🌳 Run, Forest, Run - Archibald locals say these projects could completely change the area. One plan includes building 14 large data centers on hundreds of acres of forest land. While developers say it could bring in millions in tax money, some residents are concerned about the environment and being forced to move.
- 👀 Just Joshin’ - People speaking out are starting to make a difference. Gov. Shapiro is now supporting more careful reviews of data center projects, even though he once pushed to speed them up. The goal is to better understand how they impact local communities.
🔥Bottom line: As AI keeps booming, it’s gonna need to guzzle a whole lot more land and water to stay powered up. We’ll keep the pulse on how it all shakes out. Have you heard about the PA tax credits on the chopping block? Three programs are currently under review and might be on their last legs. Head over to this article to get all the details.
