More Minnesotans Are About to Learn About Memes

Roughly 33,000 rural Minnesota households in 48 counties are about to get high-speed internet thanks to $100M in state and federal funding. That’s a lot of people who’ve gone without for too long.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on Minnesota’s broadband grants:

  1. 🖥️ Modern Modem - Gov. Walz has put a priority on getting border-to-border access for every home and business in the state. It has become particularly important now that remote work, remote learning, and telehealth have become commonplace.
  2. 🖱️ OMG DSL - The Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) estimates there are between 240,000 and 291,000 homes still without access.
  3. 💻 Streaming Streams - The money is coming from DEED itself, thanks to a program launched in 2014. They’ve already awarded $130M in grants for about 57,000 homes since the project started.
  4. 🖲️ Coming Soon - The grants will go to various broadband providers to set up access and keep the pricing affordable. That last part is equally important.
  5. 🖨️ That’s an A - Surprisingly, about 92% of Minnesota has broadband access. The remaining 8% live in hard to reach areas and don’t know the joy of getting emails about boner pills.

🔥Bottom line: It’s easy to forget that not everyone has lightning fast access to things like work emails, Netflix, and online gaming. What we take for granted is actually a necessity for many. These grants not only make things easier for the customers, it also helps the providers. Maybe the next grant will be focused on getting fast technical services when your internet goes out. But that’s probably a pipe dream, right?
