National Crisis: Starbucks To Close Hundreds Of Locations!

Starbucks—the global HQ of overpriced caffeine and complicated latte orders—is having a rough morning. The coffee giant just rolled out a “turnaround plan,” which in plain English means closing stores and cutting staff. Translation: too many leather chairs, not enough customers. Let’s dig into what’s brewing behind the counter.

Here are Five Fast Facts on the Starbucks slim-down:

  1. 📉 Slip And Slide - Same-store sales have been slipping: for six straight quarters, Starbucks has seen declining sales in stores that have been open at least a year. That’s not a good trend when you want people to keep walking in.
  1. 😣 Store Closings - As a result, Starbucks plans to close around 500 stores in the U.S. and Canada that are underperforming. Apparently, some locations just couldn't convince people that a $7 coffee was a reasonable life choice.
  1. 👋 Buh-Bye Now - The company is also laying off 900 non-store employees as part of a move to simplify its business. This means roughly 900 people are now free to enjoy coffee from other, more stable companies.
  1. 💰 Big Bucks - The overall goal of this massive corporate change is to save a whopping $500 million in operating costs. That's enough money to buy approximately 83 million grande lattes!
  1. 🤯 Wait, What?? - Despite all the bad news, the company still expects to open 1,000 new stores globally during the fiscal year. They are cutting fat in one place just to add more stores in another -- like ordering a diet coke with a triple cheeseburger.

🔥Bottom line: So next time you're waiting in line, savor that moment, because that location might be on the coffee corporation's chopping block! Starbucks is basically saying, "We're taking a quick, very expensive break and firing a few people so we can shuffle things up and sell you the same iced drink for 50 cents more." Don't worry, they'll open some new stores soon, maybe even nearby…and they’ll still forget your extra shot of espresso while spelling your name wrong.
