Nebraska Leads The Pack

As part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) signed into law last year, the requirements for people getting Medicaid assistance are changing. While most states are waiting until the federal deadline in 2027 to start using these new rules, Nebraska’s leaders basically sprinted to the front of the line (show offs!). By jumping into this eight months early, Nebraska is volunteering to be the guinea pig for a plan that could eventually change how health insurance works for millions of people across the country.

Here are Five Fast Facts on Nebraska leading the way on Medicaid changes:

  1. 🪪 Prove It - To keep their Medicaid assistance, many adults between the ages of 19 and 64 will have to prove they are working, volunteering, or going to school for at least 80 hours every month. Meh - that’s less than the time some people spend trying to pick a movie before giving up and watching reruns.
  1. 👀 Not Everyone - These changes won't apply to everyone on Medicaid, only to those using a program to expand coverage to more low-income folks. The idea is to encourage "able-bodied" adults to contribute to their community instead of hanging out like a couch potato with Wi-Fi.
  1. 📝 At Stake - The state has the needed info on most of the 70k people already enrolled in the expansion. Another 20-28k (plus 3-4k new enrollees every month) may have to cough up more details if they want to stay eligible. Help is still there...if you play ball!
  1. 🤔 Wait, What? - Critics worry eligible people may lose healthcare simply because they only have 30 days to respond to requests for documentation and the system is confusing. Then again, what government system isn't?
  1. 🤏 Shrinky Dink - Estimates suggest Medicaid could drop 5-10 million people as a result of these changes. Each state's program decisions will largely determine how many people may actually be removed.

🔥Bottom line: Whether this plan is a stroke of genius or a recipe for a giant headache depends on who you ask. Supporters think it will give people a boost of self-worth and discipline, like a very intense life coach who also happens to control your access to medicine. On the other hand, critics are worried that people who are already working three jobs might still lose their insurance just because they forgot to mail in a specific form or clicked the wrong button on a website. Either way, Nebraska is now the official test lab for the rest of the nation, and everyone is watching to see if this experiment ends with a gold star or...not.
