Great news, carnivores! The feds are spending big bucks to help meat processing facilities around the country. This means more hearty deliciousness coming your way in the future! 😋
Currently, 85% of all cattle slaughtered each year are processed through four companies. This program aims to spread that around a bit more, for everyone’s benefit.
Here are Five Fast Facts about Nebraska livestock processing grants:
- 💸 What’s The Haps? The USDA has awarded the first grants of the program. The intent is to strengthen the supply chain, help deliver more products to local areas, open up more markets for farmers, and create rural jobs.
- 1️⃣ Gettin’ It Started - The first wave included grants given to 22 companies, and included around $73M of the total of $375M. That’s a lotta cheddar for a lotta meat!
- 🚚 Landing Here At Home - The biggest chunk of the first wave – $20M – went to Greater Omaha Packing, the fifth largest beef packer in the nation. They ship their beef to all 50 states and over 70 other countries. They’re the “big” Little Engine in the industry.
- 🏗️ The Plan - Greater Omaha will use the money for a phased expansion that will increase production by almost 30% and create 275 new jobs. Now that’s bringing home the bacon…er, beef!
- 😍 Another Local Winner - Another Nebraska meat processor, Lot 279, received almost $1M to increase production of their own craft beef products sold direct to consumers. ‘Craft beef products’? THIS SOUNDS AMAZING.
🔥Bottom line: This should result directly in new good-paying jobs and a major boost to the local economy. The fact that it means more meat for happy grills everywhere is just gravy…well, you know what we mean.
