Nebraska farmers have been through enough lately to make a scarecrow start stress-eating corn. It's not all bad news, but at the same time, it's hard to celebrate a good harvest when the prices are flatter than western Nebraska.
Here are Five Fast Facts on Nebraska's struggling rural economy:
- 🌽 Slowing Down - Nebraska's rural economy weakened last month as low grain prices squeezed farmers' profits. The Rural Mainstreet Index showed slower economic activity (down 2.5%), and many rural bankers reported that weak crop prices remain a huge challenge.
- 😞 Not Going Out - Nebraska's agricultural exports took a major hit, too, dropping 16.6% during the first quarter of 2026 compared to last year. With exports across the rest of the 10-state region increasing by 7.5%, Nebraskans feel like the only kid whose lemonade stand lost money on a hot day.
- 🚜 Tariffs And Trade - Trade tensions continue to hurt the state's economy. Canada's price hikes on steel and aluminum, for example, have really hurt sales of tractors. Major agricultural equipment has completely crashed and burned for a mind-boggling 33 straight months in a row.
- 🥩 Beefy Irony - In an ironic twist of supply and demand, local ranchers are actually missing out on historically high meat prices simply because they do not have enough actual cows hanging out in their pastures to sell to anyone.
- 👍 Overall Jobs - There was one small bright spot: Nebraska's unemployment rate held steady at 3%, well below the national rate of 4.3%. That's good news, although economists expect Nebraska's job growth to remain slower because manufacturing and food-processing jobs have also been declining. Take the wins while you can find them, right?
🔥Bottom line: The state's rural economy is working hard but facing some stubborn headwinds. Low grain prices, weaker exports, trade tensions, and food-processing challenges are making it difficult for farmers and small-town businesses to gain momentum. For now, Nebraska's crops may still be growing, but everyone is hoping the prices decide to grow soon, too.
