If you’re a recent college graduate, landing your first job might be taking longer than expected. ⏳ Welp, you’re in the same boat as a ton of other newbie adults. The good news? Trying your luck in a different city could be just what the job doctor ordered. 💸🩺
In a recent write up, researchers pinpointed the top cities where new grads are finding good gigs (and a decent cost of living). Let’s dive into the details! 🏊
Here’s Five Fast Facts on where college grads are finding jobs:
- 🐌 Slow Rollin’ - New college graduates are having a tough time snagging entry-level jobs. Thanks to an uncertain economy, employers are hiring much slower and older workers are staying in jobs longer. AI is also gobbling up entry level duties. Although the nation’s unemployment rate was around 4% this past June, for new grads, it’s 7.3%.
- 📣 Pep Raleigh - According to a recent ADP survey, Raleigh, North Carolina is number one when it comes to having the most promising job prospects for new grads. The city is home to a ton of top notch research institutes, like UNC and Duke. Science and tech companies (like Cisco Systems) also set up shop in Raleigh.
- 🧀 Say Cheese! - Coming in at number two: Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Not only is Brew City’s startup culture on the rise, it’s also getting a major investment boost from some of the nation’s biggest companies. In Kenosha County, Eli Lilly is dropping $3B to expand its manufacturing…a project that’s expected to include 750 jobs. Milwaukee Tool and Northwestern Mutual are also good job targets.
- 💫 Be More - Is that Philly? Or wait, D.C.? Nope, it’s Baltimore, baby. The city is on a mission to bring more young professionals in and it just might be working. If you’re a finance nerd, Morgan Stanley’s Baltimore office is one of the biggest outside of NYC. B-More is also home to great parks and museums.
- 🤠 Career Cowboy - Austin, Texas has been attracting new grads for quite some time, and with good reason. Companies in the clean tech, AI, and semiconductor industries all hire strong in Austin. Rent is a bit on the high side, but it’s gone down 3% in the last year and city officials say they’re making affordable housing a priority.
🔥Bottom line: If you’re not getting bites on your resume in your hometown, it might be time to move to greener pastures. Spread your wings and fly! It’s the most adult thing you can do. Planning a late summer getaway? Buy someone else’s vacation on the cheap! If that sounds crazy, you’re right. It kinda does, but it’s a real thing and we explain it all here.
