New Program Gets People To Paychecks Pronto

College isn't for everyone, but that doesn't mean you can't get a good job. Nebraska just helped launch a federal grant program that lets people skip the four-year college slog and jump into job-ready skills right away. If you're looking for a new job or a career change, this could be good news for you! A few weeks of training might sidestep four years of collecting student loan statements and get you into good paychecks fast!

Here are Five Fast Facts on a new jobs training program in Nebraska:

  1. 🔍 The Program - The new Workforce Pell Grant program extends traditional Pell grant money to cover tuition for short-term workforce training programs (just 8-15 weeks), with zero letter grades and a laser focus on quickly becoming competent enough to clock in.
  1. 👂 Tell Me More - The money comes from the federal Working Families Tax Cuts Act, which was signed into law last July, so the whole country can give it a shot.
  1. 😁 Who's Eligible? - You can qualify if you’re not already on a traditional Pell Grant and haven’t maxed out your lifetime eligibility...even if you already hold a bachelor’s degree! If you have a graduate degree, though, take a seat, this isn't the program for you.
  1. 👀 Prove It - Colleges cannot just take the money and run. They have to prove they’re legit by hitting at least a 70% student completion rate and a 70% job placement rate (local employers help with this part).
  1. 👍 Let's Go - Metropolitan Community College in Omaha is one of the first in the nation to start, currently offering four eligible programs: phlebotomy tech, certified pharmacy tech, CDL, and CompTIA+ information technology.

🔥Bottom line: Nebraska is betting that free, fast training will convert more people from professional couch-sitters into employed taxpayers. If the program works as planned, it would be good news for students, employers, and parents, who'd love to stop hearing, "I'm just figuring things out," from a 28-year-old still living in the basement.
