Attending college in Wisconsin is becoming a reality for an increasing number of residents. A new tuition assistance program has just been approved by the UW Board of Regents. What’s the deal?
Here’s Five Fast Facts On Wisconsin Tuition Assistance.
- 🆓I Promise - The Wisconsin Tuition Promise program is for students in low- and moderate income households who attend any of the schools in the UW school system in the 2023 school year.
- 🎓Four Year Plan - The program pays for four years of tuition and fees in any of the 12 schools in the UW system for first-year and transfer students coming from families earning less than $62,000 annually. This money will not cover living expenses, books or any other related costs.
- 🧑🎓Private Reserve - The cash will come from $14M in reserve funding to pay for the first year. The UW system will ask for around $25M from the state for the second year of the program.
- 🧑🏫Copycat - Not wanting to be left behind (get it?) private universities in the state are now offering their own versions of the program. Carthage, for example, is offering the Carthage Commitment.
- 💰Which Came First - This isn’t a new idea. A similar program, Bucky’s Tuition Promise has been around for quite awhile. It guarantees scholarships and grants for students from households with an adjusted gross income of $60,000 or less.
🔥Bottom line: These programs serve two purposes: helping students get the education they want and need AND helping the universities get their enrollment numbers back on the climb.
