Here’s Five Fast Facts on the new TSA fee:
- ✈️ Fee Speech - Hitting the airport without a REAL ID? Soon, the TSA will start charging you an $18 fee. Proceeds from the new fee will cover the cost of the alternate screening process non-REAL IDers will have to go through.
- 🪪 Backup Plan - Don’t wanna pay the fee but don’t want to sit at the DMV for 390572 hours? The TSA will take some other forms of ID. Acceptable REAL ID alternatives include your passport or a permanent resident card. Get the full list of alts here.
- ☣️ Bio-What? - Don’t have a REAL ID or one of the approved alternatives? Get ready to spend more quality time with TSA agents. In addition to the $18 fee, you’ll go through additional screening, which may include a new “biometric identity verification” process.
- ⌚ TBD - We’re still not 100% sure when the new fee will roll out. The TSA will keep us posted. They’re expected to announce the start of the fee along with more details on the alternative verification program sometime in the near future.
- 👠 Dancin’ Shoes - Need some positive TSA news? This year, they did away with the “take your shoes off” rule. They also added family lanes at the security line to make things speedier for travelers.
