No Tax On Tips: Wisconsin Edition

It's a beautiful thing when the political winds line up with what's best for normal folks, isn't it? It appears that's what just happened in Wisconsin with a bill that would let people keep more of what they earn...if they earn tips! You're probably thinking, "what the sigma?!" right about now, but it's true - politicians actually delivered on a campaign promise! Let's see what's up.

Here are Five Fast Facts on the "no tax on tips" bill:

  1. 🔍 The Details - The Assembly and the Senate voted (with strong bipartisan support) to stop taxing tips up to $25k a year so folks like waiters and bartenders might breathe a little easier. If you make more than $150k ($300k for couples), though, you're out of luck. You'll pay and you'll be happy about it, Moneybags!
  1. 👀 The Impact - This new law - made to mirror the federal one in Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill - could affect tens of thousands of tipped workers in the state, putting as much as $1,600 back in their pockets every year! Cool, that's almost enough to buy groceries!
  1. 🎁 The Rationale - One lawmaker explained it this way: tips aren’t income, they’re gifts, so they should be taxed like it (meaning not taxed). *Ahem* You still have to be good at your job, though. Obviously.
  1. ⏳ Haha, Don't Be Unreasonable - The relief only lasts until 2028, so enjoy it while you can (and maybe vote for reps who will consider making it permanent before then)! Politicians be politicians, amiright?
  1. 🤦 But Wait... - Not everyone loves it. Some say it's just a band-aid and a better solution would be to raise wages in general. Just stop whining and take the W!

🔥Bottom line: At the time of writing this article, the bill has passed both houses now and is on the governor’s desk for his signature to make it official. Let's face it, this is the kind of thing where the politicians will break arms patting themselves on the back, but it's okay to roll your eyes at them. Plus, political winds tend to shift quickly, so when they're blowing in a favorable direction, just raise the sails and go with it! And then enjoy your bigger paycheck, of course.
