Daylight savings, huh? How about saving our sanity instead? 🤹 That extra hour of daylight was really propping up our mental health. Well, that and a marathon of Seinfeld reruns. 📺
Live under a landlord but want to reap the benefits of solar energy? A newly proposed bill would create a program that allows Ohio renters to join the party. 🌅
Here’s Five Fast Facts on OH House Bill 303:
- 💡 Sharing Is Caring - Under the proposed bill, Ohioans would get to participate in a shared community energy facility that runs on solar power. This would give residents who rent the ability to buy into solar energy projects and earn money back on utility bills.
- 🌞 Here Comes the Sun - In addition to the good vibes of going green, more Ohioans would save money on electricity costs. Gas and electric bills have been on the rise across the country. In the Buckeye State, some reported increases of up to 44%.
- 📈 The Jump Off - Why the jump in energy costs? One biggie is the new data centers being built to keep up with the AI boom. They run on the same grid as the average Joe’s and upgrading them has been pricey. Natural gas is also getting more expensive.
- ⚡ Test Run - If the bill passes, the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) would first start and run a Community Energy Pilot Program. The program would begin with 1,500 megawatts of statewide shared energy projects. PUCO would monitor the results and help pilot participants with consumer protections.
- 🤔 Not So Fast - Not everyone’s a fan of the plan. Some worry the bill would put a cost burden on energy customers outside the program. Participants would get credits based on the full price of electricity. Right now, homeowners with solar pay electricity delivery charges. The concern is that credits could be worth more than generated power and those who aren’t in the program would foot the bill.
🔥Bottom line: With energy costs as high as they are, we’ll take any break they’re dishing out. As long as it’s not at the expense of any of our fellow Americans! Are your finances a hot mess express?
