Oh SNAP! NE Families Face Less Food Aid

Everyone is feeling the pressure of higher prices, and it hurts most when you have to choose between equally important things like food and medicine or rent. One program that has been helping people avoid that choice may be coming to an end soon.

Here are Five Fast Facts on Nebraska’s SNAP extension:

  1. 🍲 The Program - The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) currently helps about 150k Nebraskans buy groceries on a regular basis using special debit cards. Funding for the cards comes from the feds but is managed by the state.
  1. 📈 The Expansion - In 2021, SNAP eligibility was expanded to help more people, and around 10k more people got the help they needed.
  1. ⏲️ The Deadline - The expansion expires in 2023 unless the state legislature takes action.
  1. 💸 The Change - According to the current guidelines, a family of three making around $38k would qualify right now. If the expansion ends, that same family would only qualify if they made $29k.
  1. 👪 The Affected - Of all SNAP participants in Nebraska, 72% of them are families with children, and 30% include at least one person with a disability.

🔥Bottom line: Times are hard, and Paychecks often aren’t what they need to be right now. If you feel strongly about this program, contact your state representatives and share your thoughts. And it wouldn’t hurt to help out your local food bank or other charities, either! We’re all in this together, Nebraska!
