Ohio Cities Take the L in the Battle for Red Light Cameras

🚦The battle over red light cameras in OH is over... for now.

The Supreme Court recently decided to uphold a rule that allows states to take funding away from cities that make money off red light cameras.

But is that...kosher? Are red light cameras...kosher? Looks like we have ourselves in quite a pickle (see what we did there?)🥒😆

Here’s Five Fast Facts on the recent ruling:

  1. 🚥Red Light (on Funding) - A statewide rule was put into place in 2019 to make sure cities weren't policing for profit. The rule deducted state funding dollar for dollar against proceeds raised from red light cameras.
  2. 😒 Take the L - Cities are upset that they lost the fight and are worried about the decrease in needed funding from the state.
  3. 💸 That's My Money - In East Cleveland, lawyers argued that state money belongs to the taxpayers, who voted for the cameras in the first place.
  4. 💰 Major Moolah - Smaller towns like Newburgh Heights made more than half their revenue off cameras. Ticked-off motorists and civil rights activists claim the cameras are a violation and an easy money grab.
  5. 🚨 Go Ahead and Stop Me -  Traffic camera superfans say they take the burden off busy police officers and make roads safer.

🔥Bottom line: State money does come from hard-working taxpayers, and it's important to use it to fund the things we need. The question is, does the state have the right to hold it back? 🤔 And is there a better way to raise money than those pesky cameras? We'll keep our eyes on how this unfolds.
