An additional $95 (or more) is being added to individual food assistance payments in February to help Michiganders pay for groceries.
Here’s the Five Fast Facts you need to know about the situation:
- 📈😭 *Surprise* Food is Getting a Lot More Expensive - Prices for food rose 7.4% over a 12-month period, according to the January Consumer Price Index from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
- 🏛️🧾The cash comes from the federal Families First Coronavirus Response Act - and will be given out to folks enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
- 💵🥬More “lettuce” to buy lettuce - In Michigan the extra SNAP cash will help approximately 1.29 million Michiganders in about 700,000 households across the state.
- 😮🥖 SNAP gives out a LOT of money to MI households - The maximum allowable cash bennies for SNAP customers is based on their respective household and goes from one Person ($250) all the way up to eight people ($1,504).
- 🏘️👪Millions of Michiganders Get Food Assistance - Recent data from MI state gov shows that in Dec. 2021 there were 1,289,239 recipients of food assistance program benefits, and they received an average of $243.61 per person.
