Although PA passed its budget, it left out funding for a popular home repair program. Let’s tool around and find out what’s happening. 🧰🔧
Here’s Five Fast Facts on PA’s home repair program:
- 🏠 Home Improvement - State-sponsored home repair programs are in-demand in PA…and in need of cash. The latest state budget didn’t include funding, even though thousands of residents are on waitlists. PA’s Whole Home Repair Program was fueled by one-time federal pandemic relief funds and closed applications last year.
- 🎩 Disappearing Act - A recent bill to create the PA Home Preservation Program passed in the House but stalled out in the Senate. Governor Shapiro originally dedicated $50M for the program in the new budget, but it didn’t make the final cut.
- 💸 Fund Times - Through the Whole Home Repair Program (WHR), a little under 4,000 homeowners received funding out of 17,000 applicants. PA counties also have to spend their share of $125M in funding by a 1/31/26 deadline. So far, only Bradford, Cameron and McKean counties have done so.
- 🎈 Inflation Station - The WHR program caps individual home projects at $50K. In today’s economy, that might not cut it. A brand new boiler alone now costs $20K. If a new program is approved, we could see a push to increase that limit.
- 👀 Looking Ahead - Now that federal funding for home repair programs is in jeopardy, the call for state-funded programs is ramping up. Lawmakers have already begun planning for the 2026-2027 budget and that address is slotted for early February.
🔥Bottom line: Inflation has hit everything from raisins to roofing. The cost of home repairs has jumped by 4% in the past year and 61% over the last decade! Fingers crossed the powers that be let some funding loose. Home prices are down across the country and PA is no exception. Which cities were hit the hardest by declining home values? Find out here!
