Lots of people multitask their work lives to get more done, and students are no exception. A new program in Washington state aims to reward those students while still in school.
Here are Five Fast Facts about Washington’s work experience class credit program:
- ✔️Get That Credit! Around a third of Washington state’s high school students have paid jobs in addition to their schooling. A new program would grant class credits for hours spent working those jobs. It’s the best kind of double dipping - earning money and school credit at the same time!
- 💵What Are The Numbers? Students age 16 and up can earn up to four class credits toward their diploma. Working 360 hours equates to one class credit, with a max of two credits earned in a single year. Any paid job counts as long as the school verifies it, and the goal is to have the program in place for fall 2023. “I’ll be working at McDonald’s for class credit” said no one ever…until now!
- 🤜🤛What’s The Point? The idea is to encourage students to learn skills that lead to long term success in both work and life: communication, time management, reliability, leadership, and more. Observe your average high school student, and you’ll see this is a VERY good thing.
- 🤝Businesses Like It - Business owners are hoping the program will increase the workforce to help with the current worker shortages. Customers will probably love it, too!
- 💼💼(💼) It’s Where We Are Right Now - With inflation causing so many problems for so many people, lots of folks are getting second (or third) jobs just to cover their bills and basic needs. In fact, more workers than ever before in the US are working two full-time jobs for this reason. We love Paychecks, but this might not be a great thing…
🔥Bottom line: We love the idea of getting class credit while earning Paychecks! We’re also big fans of teaching young people how to be healthy contributors to society. This kind of innovative solution seems like a great idea, and we look forward to seeing how it works out!
