Most young Americans ignore their credit score until they try to buy something big...and only then does it become the most important number in their lives (other than their follower count, of course). So let's try to clear up a few things before you get yourself in a financial pickle!
Here are Five Fast Facts on your credit score:
- 👍 What Is It? - A credit score helps lenders assess financial risk. The FICO score, which most lenders use, runs from 300 to 850. A higher score means better interest rates and terms. It isn't about your worth as a human being, it's a report card on your finances that doesn’t care about your personality.
- 😮 Why It Matters - When it's time for a big purchase (like a car, a first home, or a loan), the score suddenly becomes THE number that matters for all the bean counters. Yes, adulthood is confusing. Welcome to the party.
- ✅ What's In It? - It's a combination of your payment history, outstanding debt, new lines of credit, overall credit mix, and length of credit history. Rules of thumb: paying on time and in full boosts the score; missed payments, new loans, and new cards can lower it.
- 🕐 Time Is Key - Your credit score is always in motion. Slowly, like syrup in winter, but still in motion. Both the good and bad news is that it isn't made or unmade overnight - it takes time to improve, but it also takes time to torpedo it. The longer you have good habits, the better your score.
- 💵 Cash Isn't King - Paying for everything in cash won't help, because you need to use credit to build a history. It's kind of a pay-to-play system, and unless you have enough cash to buy a whole house outright, then you need your credit score.
🔥Bottom line: You're legally allowed to pull your credit report for free from each of the three credit bureaus once per year (so you can check it every four months if you spread them out). Visit www.annualcreditreport.com to get started!
Building good credit takes time, consistency, and financial discipline. Start early, pay your bills on time, and keep those balances under control. Your future self will thank you!. And if your credit score is already impressive, congratulations! You're officially better at adulting than most people.
