Paycheckology Explains: What Do Airlines Owe You for Canceled Flights?

Frequent flyers had a turbulent summer, and drunken pilots aren't the only ones to blame! 🍸✈️ In fact, things got so bad that folks in DC had to put down the airplane peanuts and take some action.

The Biden administration launched an 'airline customer service dashboard' of passenger rights for canceled or delayed flights. 10 of the nation's largest airlines are participating (and probably huffing and most likely puffing). 😤

Here’s Five Fast Facts on the flight situation:

  1. ✈️ Flight Fiasco - Since the start of the summer, US airlines have canceled roughly 55,000 flights and delayed more than 550,000. They blame the usual suspects: staffing shortages and "operational problems".
  2. 🤬 Complaints x3 - The DOT said it received 5,862 airline complaints in June. That’s three times more than they had in June 2019.
  3. 🌭 Where’s my free plane ticket? - When it comes to getting compensation for delays most airlines only made minor changes to policies they already had. For example, United is now offering meal vouchers to passengers whose flights are delayed more than three hours instead of four hours.
  4. 💃 EuroTrip - Trying to get overseas? If your flight to or within Europe is delayed or canceled, you may be entitled to reimbursement of up to 600 euros.
  5. 🌪️ Tornados Not Included - Despite the recent changes, some major US airlines still won't give out freebies to passengers whose flights are delayed or canceled due to reasons beyond the airline's control, like bad weather. Lame, right?

🔥Bottom line: Flying can really suck sometimes, but there are ways to make it suck less. Make sure you check out the new dashboard for all the latest rule changes. If you want to save some money on your next trip, booking and flying on certain days or taking a layover can make a big difference!
