Pencils or Politics: Will Michiganders Get a School Supply Tax Break?

Pencils aren't cheap these days. Neither is the very-specific scientific calculator you have to buy your middle schooler.

But is Governor Whitmer's proposed Tax Break on school supplies legit?

Here's Five Fast Facts …… :

  1. 📐 Gold Plated Rulers? Are they asking us for luxury line school items on the supply lists this year? Sure feels like it. Reports are that the average parent is spending a whopping $864 on school supplies!

  2. 🚨 Whitmer to the Rescue? Big Gretch's plan would pause the 6% Michigan sales tax on all school-related purchases through September.

  3. ❓❓ But what about…? The plan has many folks checking their calendar twice. While it's true that most public schools in Michigan start after Labor Day, many schools are already back in session. And what about the well-prepared? Would parents be reimbursed if they've already stocked up? Not likely.

  4. 😥 Sorry, Charlie - It doesn't look likely that this will pass unless Congress decides to work overtime to get it done. A similar plan was introduced in 2019 but never took off either.

  5. 🦨 Does something stink? The talking heads say this one doesn't live up to the sniff test. While it would have saved Michiganders an average of $40, it doesn't seem likely it will get done before we're all back at school.

🔥Bottom line: Was the timing on this simply poor planning on the Governor's part, or was this a bit of political theater? We may never know. But I sure could have used that $40.

Have you already done your back-to-school shopping for the year?
