Plot Twist! The 411 on PA's Filmmaker Tax Credit

I see dead people. They're everywhere. They're even voting in elections! 😱🤣 C'mon, laugh! It's a joke.

Did you know PA has an extra-special tax credit, just for filmmakers? 📽️ And did you know that a huge chunk of it went to one of the biggest names in the movie biz? 💸 Indie filmmakers' hearts were broken up more than Mr. Glass himself

Here’s Five Fast Facts on the tax credit drama:

  1. 💰 Mo' Money - Indie filmmakers with small budgets have been feeling slighted when it comes to tax credits. They were overjoyed when Harrisburg announced they were adding $100M to the pot. They also set aside $5M for PA-based film companies...
  2. 😵 Mo' Problems - ...BUT here's the twist: that special $5M went directly to Hollywood hotshot M. Night Shyamalan. Mr. Shyamalan is a local boy whose company is based out of Berwyn.
  3. 🏕️ Knock Knock - Shyamalan got the tax credit for Knock at the Cabin. The film is scheduled for a release sometime in 2023.
  4. 🎬 Split - Supporters of the decision believe giving the tax credits to bigger projects say they "grow Pennsylvania’s local economies, support small business, and keep as many Pennsylvanians employed for as long of a time as possible.” Critics say the program has been trending away from indie filmmakers for a while now, which hurts the little guys trying to get their big break.
  5. 🥨 Delco Pride - Speaking of big names, Mare of Easttown, a recent hit crime drama starring Kate Winslet, picked up $26.5 million in PA's film tax credits. We wish Kate could have picked up the Delco accent a little better. No local says "hoagie" like that...

🔥Bottom line: M. Night is a huge name in the biz and pumps a lot into PA's economy by staying loyal to the state. However, indie filmmakers deserve a shot, too. We have a feeling taxpayers would like to see more of their dollars going to the little guy, but also - there's nothing quite like a classic Shyamalan plot twist.
