Proposed OH Bill Gives Tax Breaks for Pet-Friendly Rentals

Gypsy Rose Blanchard might be following her heart, filing for divorce, and rekindling with her ex-fiancee, but there’s one burning question on our minds. 🤔 Who’s getting custody of the split couple’s adopted dog, Pixie?!  💁🏻♀️🐶

In other pet-related hot takes, we’re keeping the pulse on a new proposed bill in the Buckeye State that could boost pet-friendly housing. 🐾🏘️

Here’s Five Fast Facts on the new pet-friendly tax credit:

  1. 🐈‍⬛ Claws and Effect - The Pet Friendly Rental Act was initially introduced in September, but has been collecting dust ever since. This week, the bill gets a brand new hearing. Officials say the bill could help with Ohio’s affordable housing issues.
  1. 😻 Big Op-purr-tunity - Also known as House Bill 227, the Pet Friendly Rental Act would create a $750 per unit tax credit of up to $7,500 per taxpayer to landlords. The catch? They can’t restrict pets by breed or size. They also can’t impose pet-related rent hikes or nonrefundable fees. However, landlords can still have some pet-free units.
  1. 💸 Are You Kitten Me? - The estimated total cost of the tax credit is somewhere between $160M and $225M annually. Roughly 700,000 rental properties owned by individuals or entities across the state would be impacted, or around about 1.7M rental units.
  2. 🐩 Muttropolitan Living - Animal welfare groups say the tax credit will help more Ohio pet owners keep their furry friends. Many people are forced to turn their animals over to shelters because of a lack of affordable pet-friendly housing options. Some people even forgo housing altogether and live out of their cars in order to keep their pets close.
  1. 🦴 A Walk on the Bark Side - So how many Ohio renters have fuzzy BFFs at home? Officials estimate that out of 1.5M renter-occupied housing units in Ohio, about 370,000 have at least one dog and roughly 300,000 have at least one cat. That’s a whole lot of fetch and cuddles.

🔥Bottom line: Ya know, we can’t even guess who Pixie’s preferred parent would be. If we were that pup, we’d keep our furry head on a swivel! Do you know how much Americans spend on their pets? This article has some pretty paw-some stats.
