Put the Kids to Work!

It’s nearly summer, and about 250,000 Michigan teenagers are about to join the workforce.

Look out, world, here they come! Grand Rapids and West Michigan are teaming up on an interesting project to get jobs for all those youngsters!

Here’s Five Fast Facts about the collaboration …… :

  1. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧 So. Many. Teens. There are roughly 500,000 residents between the ages of 16 and 19 in Michigan, and about half of them are about to get their very first j-o-b.
  1. 🆘 With a little help from a friend - The city of Grand Rapids and West MI Works are partnering up to help these would-be job getters find a paycheck of their very own. The partnership is known as GRow1000 and was formed during the pandemic.
  1. 💲💰 Jobs! Jobs! Jobs! Since forming, GRow1000 has helped over 600 teens realize the joy and pain of opening their first paycheck only to see how much the government takes. Such an extraordinary rite of passage.
  1. 💥 New this year - In addition to connecting teens to jobs, the program has also launched the GRow1000 Academy to preach the value of long-term employment to the 18-24-year-old crowd.
  1. ⏰ Work it - The newly minted workforce will be placed with employers for 6 weeks or 120 hours. Which, by our calculations, still leaves them plenty of time to get their teen on. Whatever that means.

🔥Bottom line: It’s time the kids of Gen Z start pulling their weight, am I right!? If this program doesn’t work for them, I’ve got a lawn that needs mowing.
