Should All Americans Pay Income Tax?

We love a good Amazon haul! 🥰🛒 Especially when you’ve got that sweet Prime membership. What do you call two monkeys that share the same account? Prime mates! 🐵

Speaking of Prime mates, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos just hit us with a tax idea he thinks could change the game for the average American…but is it realistic? 🤔

Here’s Five Fast Facts on taxes in America:

  1. 💰 Breakfast with Bezos - Jeff Bezos has entered the “tax the rich” chat with a very different pitch: cut taxes for lower-income Americans instead. Bezos pointed out that the top 1% of earners already pay around 40% of federal income taxes, while the bottom half contributes roughly 3%
  1. 🧑‍⚖️ Stuck and Stalled - Cutting taxes for lower earners sounds popular in theory, but turning it into actual law is another story. A recent Senate proposal aimed to exempt the first $75,000 of income for joint filers from federal taxes, but so far it hasn’t gained major traction.
  1. 👛 Uncle Sam Calls - Even if your federal income tax bill dropped to zero, the IRS wouldn’t exactly disappear from your life. Americans still run into taxes almost everywhere: at the gas pump, at hotels, on paychecks, on property bills, and even through vehicle registrations and license fees.
  1. 🏘️ State of Affairs - Lifetime tax burdens vary depending on where Americans live. For example, residents of New Jersey face the highest estimated lifetime tax burden at roughly $987,000, while residents of West Virginia face the lowest at approximately $358,000.
  2. 🌟 Extra Credit - For many households, the tax return math changes completely once deductions and credits enter the picture. Programs like the earned income tax credit and child tax credit helped roughly 76 million households avoid owing federal income taxes in 2025.

🔥Bottom line: No income tax sounds like a great idea, but right now it’s just an Amazon dream. That being said, we’d sure love to keep more of our paychecks!
