State Employees Are Getting A Raise!

Republican lawmakers have approved a pay bump for state employees, with a special emphasis on corrections officers. That’s great news for some under-appreciated workers!

Here’s Five Fast Facts State Employee Pay Increases:

  1. 💰 Green Green - The Republican-controlled Budget Committee gave the green light for 4% and 2% raises, respectively, in each of the next two years. This applies to all state employees.
  2. 📉 Shrinkage - While the raises are a great thing, they’re still less than what Gov. Evers wanted: 5% and 3% respectively.
  3. 👮 Lockdown - Corrections Officers have a different situation. Their current base salary is $19, with an additional $4 of federal pandemic relief money that dries up at the end of the month.
  4. 📈 Next Level - As a result, add-on pay for CO’s in maximum security prisons increases from $2 to $3 an hour.
  5. 🫙 Vacancy - The state currently has more than 1,500 empty CO positions. So, officers in prisons with a 40% job vacancy rate get a $5 raise. Evers wanted to give them a $13 bump.

🔥Bottom line: State employees deserve that money, especially the CO’s. But exactly how much probably comes down to how you identify yourself politically. One thing’s for sure, though: If we ever want those prisons re-staffed to as close to 100% as possible, more than just a few bucks an hour is necessary.
