State Grant Money Heads for the Coast

Gov. Evers has announced more than $1.4M in grants is headed to coastal cities in the state to kickstart some economic growth and help improve some much-needed coastal management.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on Coastal Grants:

  1. 🌊Floaters - The grants are going to 41 different projects and also involve matching funds from municipalities and other agencies for a grand total of $3.4M. This aint no FOXXCON!
  2. 🚤Great, Lakes! - A total of 15 counties bordering Lakes Superior and Michigan, over a whopping 800 miles are included in the process. In other words: the cool lakes. Suck it, Huron.
  3. 📘Building Up - While the bulk of the money is going toward the usual suspects like planning, building, improvement and access projects in local communities (and the Lincoln Park Zoo), grants have also been awarded for scientific and developmental studies and projects at universities and conservation sites.
  4. 🚰Gone Green - Environmental issues also factor into the plan, with several projects focusing on flooding and infrastructure, water quality  and general coastline support. Plus, the Port Washington Lighthouse badly needs a makeover.
  5. 💵Work it - While no job creation is guaranteed it’s still expected, since this stuff isn’t gonna build itself. Plus, someone’s gotta sell stuff to the tourists (and man there are a LOT of tourists).

🔥Bottom line: Infrastructure like this often gets overlooked and rising lake levels are doing a ton of damage to our coastal communities. We’re also in the middle of a tourism boom, so it makes sense we take care of non-waterpark stuff while we have the chance. It’s another way to ensure our economy continues its strong upward trend.
