Still Looking for a Cheap Vacation? The State of Michigan Has Your Back(pack)

It’s been a tough year to plan a getaway. Gas prices are still high, restaurants, hotels, and resorts are understaffed, and the airlines are a mess. So what is one to do to get some kicks around here? The state of Michigan has the answer.

Here’s Five Fast Facts …… :

  1. 🏕️ Cheap Ain’t Free - Camping has always been a low-cost alternative for lodging when traveling. But let’s face it - even camping isn’t free. There’s all that gear you have to buy upfront. Sleeping bags, tents, coolers, hammocks - oh my. So what’s a camper to do?
  2. 🔦 Hit Up the State - To get more people outside the state of Michigan, has introduced two “gear libraries” that will lend out camping equipment for free.
  3. 🍢 West Siders Unite - One of the two centers, Thrive Outside, is located in Grand Rapids and lends high-quality supplies to residents. You can grab tents, sleeping bags, lanterns, and even cooking equipment. You supply the marshmallows, of course.
  4. 🥾 East Siders too - Most recently, Detroit was awarded an Outdoor Foundation grant, and through Detroit Outdoors, they lend equipment to community and school groups that take the local kids camping.
  5. 💸 Who Pays? - The programs are primarily funded by Michigan-based companies like Carhartt and Wolverine Worldwide. The aim is to allow more access to outdoor activities to residents throughout the state.

🔥Bottom line: The great outdoors is awesome, and camping is a great way to see the beautiful state we call home. And now, it’s that much cheaper, thanks to these ingenious lending libraries.
