Depending on where you live, a dollar can seemingly get you either a mansion with a hot tub or a parking spot the size of a shoe. Let’s look at which US cities or states will treat your paycheck like royalty…and which ones just laugh down their noses at your meager piggy bank. Welcome to “Stretch That Paycheck: Hunger Games Edition!”
Here are Five Fast Facts on where your money stretches well (or not):
- 👍 Y’all Get Bang For Your Buck! - Generally speaking, the South and the Midwest are the best places to stretch your dollar. The salaries in these regions are lower, but the costs more than make up for that. And the people are so gosh-darned friendly there, too!
- 🐖 Piggy Plug - In Arkansas, your paycheck does backflips. You can buy groceries, pay rent, and still have enough left over for some really good BBQ. Best of all is housing, where average rents are less than half the national average! Soo-ee!
- 🥣 Affordable Living - Tennessee is another affordable location — the value of your paycheck is sky-high compared to low costs for gas, groceries, and housing. You can even afford name-brand cereal instead of that amazingly generic tasty treat, Frosty Squares!
- 💨 LOL, Good Luck - If you blink in LA, your money disappears. One avocado toast = two weeks of rent in the Midwest. Making a living here is like auditioning for a part in that new blockbuster film – constant rejection and inadequacy.
- 😵 Not So Golden - Want to stretch your paycheck in San Francisco? It can’t be done. Eggs are almost $1 each, and rent there is so high that your wallet just screams for mercy every time you open Zillow. Don’t even think about filling your car up with gas, either, due to the highest prices in the country. They may have terrific West Coast sunsets, but that shadow you see creeping closer is the death of your bank account.
🔥Bottom line: So, if your bank account is wailing louder than a college liberal at a Trump rally, maybe it’s time to move. Some places give your paycheck a gym membership and protein shakes — others throw it into a pit and yell, “FIGHT FOR YOUR LIFE!” Choose wisely, folks. And maybe avoid the places where even pigeons are paying rent.
