Summer Gas Prices: What Could Happen

We’re planning a big cross-country road trip to see as much of America as possible for her 250th! 🥳 Key word: planning. By the looks of gas prices and what’s left in our wallet, we might not make it out of the driveway. 🥴🚨

Will costs at the pump ever go back down? We hope so, but it’s gonna take more than some good vibes and a shrine to the gas gods.🙏 Let’s unpack what could be in store this summer.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on this summer’s gas prices:

  1. 🛢️ Barrel O’ Fun - Drivers got a little breathing room at the pump this week, but the bigger story is happening thousands of miles away. Oil prices remain near $100 a barrel as tensions between the U.S. and Iran continue to create uncertainty for global energy supplies.
  2. 🎈 Bloated AF - Drivers aren't just noticing higher prices at the pump. They're showing up in the inflation numbers too. Recent data showed gasoline prices jumping 21.2% in a single month, the largest monthly increase since CPI records began in 1967.
  1. ⛴️ Give It To Me Strait - Experts say the fastest path to lower gas prices would be a lasting de-escalation in the Middle East and the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Both developments would help ease supply concerns that have kept oil markets on edge for months.
  2. ⌛ The Long Game - Even if we see oil prices drop, that doesn't necessarily mean cheaper gas is right around the corner. Between refining costs, transportation issues, and retailer pricing, there are plenty of stops between a barrel of oil and your local gas station.
  1. ⛽ Cheap Tricks - When gas prices surge, governments don't have a magic "make fuel cheaper" button. Instead, federal officials expanded sales of lower-cost ethanol-blended gasoline, released 172M barrels of emergency oil reserves, and joined an international effort that added another 400M barrels of oil to global markets.

🔥Bottom line: You probably can't influence Middle East peace talks, but you can squeeze a few dollars out of your next fill-up. Experts recommend joining gas station rewards programs, shopping around for lower prices, and using credit cards that offer fuel rewards. Need a break on rent? Maybe all you need to do is ask (and read this article).
