Did you know that “corn sweat” is a thing? Neither did we, but it is. And it’s a large part of why Nebraska gets more humid during the summer. Go figure!
Here are Five Fast Facts on Nebraska’s corn-driven summer mugginess:
- 🌽 What The Heck?! Apparently, all plants sweat out excess moisture when they get hot, just like people do! The technical term is “evapotranspiration” but normal folk here just call it “corn sweat.”
- 🌽💦 How Much Sweat? Corn does more of it than most plants - just one acre of corn can sweat up to 4,000 gallons of water every day! That’s more sweat than a hooker in church on Sunday!
- 🚜How Much Corn? Our farmers grew almost 2 billion bushels of corn last year (3rd most in the country). They don’t call us the CORNhusker state for nuthin’.
- 🌱🌊What Else Contributes? It’s not only the corn, of course. The summer humidity here is also influenced by things like rivers and other crops, both here and in the surrounding states. Still, the end result is that a Midwest cornfield can feel muggier than Miami Beach! There’s a lot fewer bikinis, though (unfortunately).
- 📈More And More - The Midwest is getting muggier every year because corn planting is expanding from Texas to Canada. Corn farmers grew 3% more corn last year than the year before!
🔥Bottom line: We’re not entirely sure how this affects Paychecks, but this was so fascinating that we had to share it with you! We imagine this could be a good opportunity for businesses like air conditioning companies, towel makers, and things like that. No comment on what businesses might benefit from “corn sex…”
Have you ever heard of corn sweat (or corn sex) before??
