Surcharges Are Sneaking In Everywhere

Have you ever looked at a receipt and wondered if the restaurant was charging you for the oxygen you breathed while waiting for your burger? The answer is shockingly close to yes - welcome (back) to the era of the surprise surcharge! Americans are currently being nickel-and-dimed by a mountain of random surcharges. Some are legit...but there's enough of them popping up now that it bears some scrutiny.

Here are Five Fast Facts about surging surcharges:

  1. 🪙 Small Change - About 34% of small businesses now add credit-card surcharges, meaning just paying with plastic can cost extra. Maybe we should carry around a big bag of gold coins instead.
  1. 🍔 Yeah, About That - Around 20% of restaurants charge extra service fees, up from 16% in 2022. So your burger now comes with a side of mystery math.
  1. ⛽ Fueling Speculation - Companies often say rising costs (like fuel) are to blame, which is why you’re seeing things like fuel surcharges on flights, shipping, and deliveries. Funny thing, though, how those surcharges often don't go away when gas prices go down.
  1. 🤷 Too Late - Businesses love these fees because of something called the “lock-in effect.” Basically, once you’re about to buy something, you’re too committed to back out…even if the price suddenly jumps.
  1. 📉 Going Down - Even though people are frustrated, most still pay the extra fees, driving consumer sentiment to record lows even worse than 2008 and the pandemic. Still better than the Great Depression, though, so there's that.

🔥Bottom line: The days of "what you see is what you pay" are on life support. We are living in a world where a $15 meal can easily turn into a $22 gauntlet once you add the service fee, the credit card fee, and the "we just felt like it" fee. Businesses say they need the extra cash to survive, and to be fair, we're not saying that's not necessarily incorrect. But customers are starting to feel like they’re being pranked by their own receipts, and if this keeps up, don't be surprised if your next haircut comes with a "scissors maintenance surcharge" and a fee for the chair you sat in.
