We smell money! 👃💵 Is that a tax refund in your pocket, or are you just happy to see us? Come to think of it, we’re way overdue for a dinner date. We’ll make the reservations. 🍸🥩
While a fancy dinner out might be in the cards for some refund receivers, many Americans are being more frugal this year. 👛 Although tax refunds were larger, the wonky economy has a lot of folks socking their extra funds away for safekeeping.
Here’s Five Fast Facts on what Americans are doing with their tax refunds:
- 💰 Big & Beautiful - It’s true, people are getting bigger tax refunds this year. The average refund is over $3,400, which is about 11% higher than last year. A big reason is updated tax credits from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), which can make a big difference for families with lower incomes.
- 📈 Rise and Shine - Refunds may be higher, but so are everyday costs. Inflation reached 3.3% in March, with food prices up 2.7% and energy costs jumping 12.5%. Rising oil prices tied to global tensions are pushing gas prices higher, adding pressure on American households.
- 🦸 Super Savers - Many taxpayers are taking a more cautious approach with their refunds. About one-third plan to save the money, while 1 in 5 say they’ll use it to pay down debt. Fewer people are spending on non-essentials, with just 6% planning to splurge, down from last year.
- 🛒 The SNAP Back - There’s more to the OBBBA than bigger refunds. New SNAP rules could reduce participation by millions each month, while other changes hit lower-income households harder. Meanwhile, the biggest tax benefits are expected to go to higher earners.
- 🔮 Future Fears - The short-term boost might not last. Projections indicate the lowest-income households could lose around $1,600 per year over the long run. In other words, bigger refunds today could come with trade-offs down the line.
🔥Bottom line: When times are tough and money’s already tight, it makes sense to sock away that refund instead of treating yourself. At least for now! Speaking of refunds, you may have heard the buzz around possible tariff refunds. Who gets those (if anyone) and how do they impact your paycheck? Get caught up on all the latest in this article.
