Thank You Very Much, Mr. Roboto! SW PA Gets $62M To Build More Bots

Apparently, the Pittsburgh area is a world leader in robotics, self-driving vehicles, and AI...who knew?! #BeeBoop 🤖🚘💻

The Pittsburgh metro area is getting a bot-load of funding to boost up their tech sector. Leaders say the funding and projects will create “family-sustaining” jobs throughout the region.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on the new funding plan:

  1. 🤖 Bot Back Better - Southwestern PA's New Economy Collaborative is set to receive $62.7M for bot building. The funds are part of the Build Back Better Regional Challenge.
  2. 🚀 Billion Dollar Boost - The area is one of only 21 regions across the country that will split $1B to boost economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic.
  3. 🍈 Nice Mellons! - Carnegie Mellon University is in charge of overseeing how the grant money is used. The university is known for being a driver of robotics and automation technology.
  4. 🥅 Goal Getter - The goal of these efforts is to add 14,000 workers on related projects and to pump $550 million into the local economy.
  5. 🖤💛 Go Steelers - Supporters say that the funding will help bring the area back to life after the steel economy dried up. The projects will be a group effort among businesses, universities, labor unions and local governments in the 11-county area.

🔥Bottom line: The robots might not be taking over *yet*, but the added funding could turn Southwestern PA into a tech hub. That's great news for the area's economy, which is way overdue for a comeback. Will any big tech companies set up shop in the area? We'll have to wait and see!
