We listen and we don’t judge. 😌 Your secret’s safe with us. That is, unless you have some really hot gossip. We can’t let the tea go cold, ladies! 🫖
Speaking of judging…if you live in PA, you may have heard some buzz about a special “yes” or “no” on the upcoming ballot. ☑️ Wonder what that’s all about? Keep reading!
Here’s Five Fast Facts on PA’s retention elections:
- 🧑⚖️ Hot Seats - In some states, judicial elections are partisan ones, and PA is in that club. However, once a judge is elected, all partisanship is supposed to go out the door. To keep things kosher, PA has voters decide whether or not a judge stays in their seat after their term expires.
- 🗳️ Ballot Beat - This year, a “yes” or “no” will appear on ballots next to three state Supreme Court judges' names: Christine Donohue, Kevin Dougherty, and David Wecht. Each of them got elected to 10-year terms as Democrats in 2015, which gave the Court a 5-2 liberal majority.
- 🙋🏽♀️ Pick Me - What happens if one or more justices gets voted off the island? They’d wrap up their term at the end of the year and Gov. Shapiro would choose an interim replacement. But here’s the twist: whoever Shapiro picks needs approval from the Republican-controlled state Senate. If they can’t agree, a slot could stay open until the next partisan election in 2027.
- 🤼 Battle Royale - Republicans see this election as a way to grab some power back and eventually put more of their butts in Supreme Court seats. Democrats want the current judges to stay put to keep their policies in place. So far, millions have been spent by both parties on advertising, campaigning, and direct pledges to the judges.
- ⚖️ Unlikely Story - Retention elections aren’t a common thing in PA. Over the last two decades, resignations, retirements, and judge deaths have made them pretty rare. The last time the state saw one in the Supreme Court was in 2017.
🔥Bottom line: Regardless of which side of the aisle you’re on, make sure to pay attention at the polls! Your “yes” or “no” could make some serious PA history. Wonder who’s feeling the worst of the PA budget stalemate burn? Head to this article for all the details.
