The Biggest Hidden Risk In AI

Remember when the scariest thing at work was accidentally hitting “Reply All?" Well, welcome to the future, where companies are now using enterprise AI tools to capture everything employees know. This sounds helpful until you realize the AI is becoming you but without needing snacks, sleep…or a paycheck!

Here are Five Fast Facts on the biggest hidden risk of enterprise AI:

  1. 🥸 AI Stalker - Companies are using AI tools to record meetings, read documents, and analyze conversations so they can save what employees know (and how they think) forever like a digital brain on a shelf. That joke you made in a meeting? Immortalized forever, so make it good!
  1. 📊 Built In - These enterprise AI tools - ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, and others - are built into systems that you use every day. Anything and everything you type or say gets captured, and since the company owns the tool, it also owns that data. Congratulations, you’re now a human USB drive.
  1. 🤷 No Person, No Problem - Before AI, when someone left, their expertise and experience left, too. Now, companies can keep the brainpower without keeping the actual brain attached. The company reuses that knowledge even if you quit, retire, or escape to a beach.
  1. 🦹 Self-Deletion - The irony is that while workers are (rightfully) concerned about losing their jobs to AI, they are actually training their own potential AI replacements just by using them! If AI had an evil sense of humor, it would be muh-ha-ha-ing right now.
  1. 👍 What To Do - If possible, use your own personal AI, which means the company can't copy how you solve problems or easily replace your expertise. If that's not possible, then try to negotiate before taking the job to treat AI like intellectual property - your AI thoughts are your property, not theirs. Unions or collective employee actions may be needed to protect workers.

🔥Bottom line: In the past, companies needed employees because of what they knew. Now, companies want to download that knowledge into AI so it lasts forever...even after you’re gone. It’s like cloning your work brain, except the clone never asks for vacation, never gets tired, and never forgets anything. Keeping tighter control over your AI usage will help you stay marketable and increase the value of your expertise and experience. And that can not only save your job, but bring in ever bigger paychecks, too!
