The Brand New Fee for PA’s EV Drivers

We’ve been having this recurring nightmare that someone hit us with a car muffler. The worst part? We wake up absolutely exhausted. 🥱💤 Tip jar is on your left!

Need something to get those engines revving? How about a brand new fee for driving around in your electric vehicle? 🚙 No one asked and we received.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on PA’s new fee for EV drivers:

  1. 💰 April Fool’s Gold - Starting on April 1st, PennDot began collecting a new road use tax from EV drivers across PA. Signed into law by Gov. Shapiro last year, Act 85 now requires both EV and plug-in hybrid drivers pay an annual fee.
  1. ⛽ The Fee’s Knees - Why the new fee? Drivers of gas guzzlers pay fuel taxes when they fill up at the pump. That money goes towards road and bridge maintenance. Through the new fee, EV drivers will pay their fair share.
  1. ⚡ Tax Facts - How much will you owe? If you’re an EV or plug-in hybrid driver and your registration expires after May, keep an eye out for a letter from PennDot with all the details. In 2025, the fee for EV drivers is $200 and for plug-in hybrid drivers it’s $50. FYI - there’s a bump up in 2026 ($250 and $63 respectively).
  1. 🚗 It’s a Twofer - Wanna get it all over with? PA will allow you to pay for both 2025 and 2026 at the same time and cut you a little break. This year, if you choose the two-year tax payment option, EV owners pay $400 ($50 savings) and hybrid owners pay $100 ($13 off).
  1. 💵 Ways to Pay - Right now, the new fees are being collected separately from your vehicle registration, but you’ll need to pay with your registration renewal in the future. PennDOT says there will be an online payment system in place by August.

🔥Bottom line: We also heard that Tesla drivers will soon need to pay the Big Doofus fee. No word on when that goes into effect. If you’re a big car guy or gal, you may have heard the rumblings of a Honda/Nissan merger. Want the cliff notes on this steamy story? In this article, we cover all the bases.
