The British Are Coming for EV Batteries

Wisconsin’s attempt at cashing in on the fracking sand craze went belly up back in 2017. We’ve been left with a bunch of holes in the ground ever since. Thankfully, a UK-based company is stepping in to make chicken scratch out of chicken…umm… “spit” by repurposing a surprising product.

Here’s Five Fast Facts on Repurposed Sand Pits:

  1. ⚒️ Gaping Holes - Wisconsin had nearly 100 fracking sand pits in 2016. That was until Texas companies realized they could produce and transport sand for much cheaper. This one move marked the end of the Great Wisconsin Fracking Sand Boom.
  2. ⛏️ Digging In - Economic officials in Chippewa County have found a potential solution: England-based Collaborative Engineering Services. These Brits plan to invest up to $15M to redevelop a former processing site nearby. They’ll use it to repurpose EV batteries.
  3. ⚡ Shredded - When EVs are recalled, their battery packs are shredded, even if the cells are still working. So, the goal is to reuse the cells to make new battery packs for other renewable energy products.
  4. 👷 Team Building - The company is already assembling an engineering team by partnering with UW Eau Claire, UW-Stout, and other technical colleges. They want operations up and running toward the end of 2024.
  5. 🚆 Join the Crowd - Collaborative Engineering Services isn’t alone on this. A company called Ardisam Incorporated bought a former fracking site in Arland, in part due to the new railyard on the property.

🔥Bottom line: Surely some of our readers are beyond delighted at the thought of EVs getting wrecked like Paul Walker. The fact that those obliterated vehicles are going to bring jobs to Wisconsin (even though they’re being used to make other renewables) is probably even better.
